Negative Evidence Defined, Explained and Demonstrated

Evidence isn't tangible...it only exists in the presence of a research question. This book dives into direct, indirect, negative, and conflicting evidence...one by one. 

Indirect evidence may be difficult to identify. This section will cover how to not only identify it, but seek it to use to create proof. 

As the phrase alludes to, negative evidence is elusive to many genealogists. Its mere absence in tangible form makes it difficult to understand, identify, and ultimately to use in genealogy research.  This book will help genealogists to define not only negative evidence, but also negative searches and negative findings. An emphasis is placed on actively seeking negative evidence followed by a discussion of how to best correlate it, then write and cite it. The book offers an extensive literature review on articles that effectively use negative evidence. Exercises included.

Conflicting evidence will be discussed including how to identify it and help determine what is accurate. Methods to aid in this include evidence analysis and other forms of evidence correlation. 

Dr. Joyce is a genealogy researcher whose personal work has focused on her Iowa, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin ancestors who immigrated from England, Germany, Ireland, and Norway. In 1998, she begin managing the marketing initiatives at Genealogy.com which prompted researching her own family. Jan holds the CG and CGL credentials from the Board for Certification of Genealogists as well as the AG accreditation from The International Commission for the Accreditation of Professional Genealogists. Her genealogy career is focused on researching and writing about her own family as well as teaching research methodology. Jan manages the ProGen Study Groups, the ProGen Practicum certification preparation group, and was pivotal in relaunching the GenProof Study groups.
